One of the quiet but critical parts of raising a healthy litter of pit bull puppies is daily weight tracking. It might not be flashy, but it gives us vital information about each puppy’s development in those earliest days of life.

From birth through about 2 weeks of age, puppies are at their most vulnerable. They can’t regulate their body temperature, and they rely entirely on nursing for hydration and nutrition. Because of this, consistent weight gain is one of the best indicators of healthy growth.

We weigh each puppy every 24 hours to:

  • Ensure they are gaining appropriately

  • Make sure no one is falling behind and everyone is thriving

  • Support timely decisions like supplementing or rotating pups for extra nursing time when needed

We use a digital scale with a removable tray, which you can easily find on Amazon (just search for a “puppy or small animal scale”). It’s an affordable and essential tool for raising a litter of pit bull puppies.

Sometimes the puppies wiggle or roll around on the scale—but we simply guide them back calmly and gently, keeping the experience positive and low-stress. These moments aren’t just practical—they’re also early opportunities to build trust through touch, routine, and tone of voice.

Daily weight checks also help us get to know each pup as an individual. One might need a little extra time at the milk bar. Another might be gaining faster than the rest. This close monitoring allows us to support each one based on their specific needs—not just as a litter, but as little lives growing into future companions.

At Bad to the Bone Kennels, we believe strong dogs start with thoughtful beginnings. Daily weight checks are just one of the many small, steady routines that help shape happy, healthy puppies.
